Obituary for Robert Charles Young

Robert Charles Young, 81, of Bedford, Kentucky passed away peacefully at the Veterans Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky on July 7, 2019. Bob was born on March 28, 1938, into the Young family, one of the oldest settlers of Trimble County. He and his family were members of Bedford Christian Church. Bob graduated from Trimble County High School in 1956 moving on to earn his bachelor’s degree from DePauw University in 1960. Upon graduation, he received a scholarship to the University of North Carolina, where he earned M.ED. He began teaching English in Seymour, Indiana, upon graduation. Bob then enlisted in the Navy from 1963 to 1966, where he served as Officer of the Deck Underway, Electronics Officer, and a Legal Officer. Upon leaving the service, he fulfilled his love of travel, and thirst of knowledge, by touring parts of Europe he hadn’t visited. He worked in various jobs; shops, milk plants, wheel factory, etc. This is where he would meet the love of his life and married, Maiken Ischiel Young from Denmark and Sweden. After their return to Trimble County he went back to teaching. Bob taught at Oldham County Junior High until 1974. During his years teaching English at Oldham County, he started the Oldham County Varsity Soccer Program. The program grew through his hard work and great coaching, becoming the state champions in 1971. To many in the Oldham County Varsity Program, Bob was the mentor-father they never had. Using his own funds, he built the goals nets by hand to get the program off the ground. Many of his players would meet for many years to recall memories. As in many school systems, teachers must wear many hats. Bob experimented with an open classroom concept. Many of these are concepts implemented in classrooms today. He went on to teach English and Spanish, at Trimble County High School from 1977 to 1984. During this time, Bob was also active in sports and helping with reading programs. Upon leaving TCHS, he taught communications at Ivy Tech. Maiken’s and Bob’s weaving business had taken off, and they decided it would be best to work together to fulfill their many orders. With the travel bug biting them again, they moved across the pond living in England and Denmark. This was a time of learning new skills, languages, and immersing themselves into the countries they were visiting or traveling to. During this time, Bob took a job at a brewery and was bitten by the hop bug. Upon their return to the states, Bob continued his love by raising his own hops and brewing his own beer. Bob, in his downtime, would bike, putting more than 3000 miles on his bike, he walked 252 miles in five weeks in the Southwest of England, enjoyed 3 point climbing on the Isle of Skye and the Rockies, and sailed a Sjaelland Rundt in a sailboat race. Upon returning to Trimble County and in retirement, Bob, continued his passion for life, thirst for knowledge, and compassion for his fellow man. Bob served as a case manager for migrant workers, guiding them through the transition into a new country. This came as second nature, with his strong language skills and life experiences. Bob loved reading and later became a dealer in rare and used books. Whether it was sports or a chess match, you could count on Bob being super competitive. As his body aged, he had played darts throughout his life and would compete in many dart tournaments in Lexington and Louisville. He enjoyed brewing his own beer, and even growing his own hopps. Bob never lost his desire to travel, read voraciously, and his drive to learn. If there was one word for Robert C. Young, it was “multifaceted.”
Robert leaves to mourn his passing, his wife of 44 ½ years, Maiken Ischiel Young of Bedford, Kentucky; his daughter, Kirsten Clingerman and her husband Tony of Lexington, Kentucky; his brother, James Young and his wife Sherry of Bedford, Kentucky; many nieces and nephews, family and friends in Sweden, Denmark, and Trimble County. He was preceded in death by his father- John B. Young; mother- Martha Jean Harper Young; and his two sisters Wanda Scott and Lillice Craft.
